How the Quilt Clapper began
I'm a quilter who strives for precision piecing. After my husband saw me stacking books on top of a regular wooden clapper, he said he could fix this by making a weighted one. That sounded great, but if he went to the work of making a custom one, I wanted beautiful quilting patterns inlaid in the wood.
I liked mine so much, he decided to make more. Within a few months he had made 60 of them with varying designs. We took them to a local quilting retreat and were surprised when every one of them sold, with orders placed for more. It was immediately clear that there was interest in a heavier yet beautiful clapper.
Weight makes a difference
Standard clappers weigh approximately 1 pound
Our custom Quilt Clappers weigh approximately 2 pounds

With a Clapper
I immediately noticed the difference when using a weighted clapper on cotton seams, but found when working with denim, the difference was huge. It leaves pieced blocks with crisp seams you just can't get any other way.
The unfinished wood on the bottom of the clapper helps wick away heat and moisture after pressing. Seams may be pressed open or to the side, leaving them flat either way.
Without a Clapper
This quilt block has been ironed just like the first, but no clapper was used while the seams cooled. It's hard to believe the difference a weighted clapper makes until you have tried one for yourself.
At about twice the weight of a standard clapper, our custom clappers leave seams crisp and flat. No more book stacking required, Yay!!!
